Unbeaten start continues for Cooks

Both sides continued their unbeaten starts to the season with the first teams`run of draws showing the character of the team and also signs that with a bit more luck a first win is just around the corner.May 11 th saw Irthlingborough Town II`s visit Compton Park and after losing the toss the visitors invited Cogenhoe to bat. After a poor start which saw the Cooks slump to 6-2 a stand of 90 between Gareth Tompkins 58 and Dan McLaughlin 35 seemed to give the hosts a chance of posting a decent total, however from 96-2 the Cooks collapsed to 135 all out in the 42 over with Pete Whiting having the magnificent analysis of 10-7-9-5 for the visitors. The rain delays caused the Irthlingborough innings to be reduced to 37 overs and the Cogenhoe bowlers were equally as miserly as there Irthlingborough counterparts as Alex Harvey-Jones 3-24 , Jason Kruger 2-29 along with James Ashby 6-3-6-0 ,Tom Smyth and Nick Lester restricted the visitors to 98-5 and a winning draw for Cogenhoe. The next week away at Overstone  and another draw as Overstone II`s were put into bat and after a slow start eventually reached 164-9 from their 50 overs with Jason Kruger the star man for Cogenhoe with figures of 15-5-48-6. The Cogenhoe reply also got off to a slow start and with a mini collapse defeat looked  the most likely outcome. But Dan 24, Ashley Davis 27 and Paul Browning 31 pushed the score along and in the end Cogenhoe ended up on 140-8 and a losing draw.

The seconds continued their great start to the season with a first ever visit to newly promoted Medbourne. Skipper Ryan Knight lost the toss and the Cooks were asked to bat. In form Matt Golby got the innings off to a great start with a typically powerful 53. Wickets fell at regular intervals but the runs kept flowing as Ryan 28, Jack Quennell 21, Matt Irons 24 no and 34 extras saw the seconds bowled out for 201 and maximum batting points. Then the father and son act of Tony and Mark Bird took centre stage as Tony 13-1-38-5 and Mark 13-2-60-4 ran through the Medbourne side with Adam Lee-Brown wrapping things up with the final wicket to dismiss the hosts for 107 with Fletcher Callaghan picking up 3 catches. The Birds were at it again the following week at Compton Park where Grendon & Prims II`s were the visitors. Tony with 13-4-24-2 opened the attack with Syd Mason 13-6-13-3 to limit Grendon & Prims ambitions with the visitors 18-5 at one stage. Mark then continued where he had left off the previous week with 7.3-3-4-3 with Matt Irons picking up the other wicket whilst Jack picked up 3 catches as Grendon & Prims were dismissed for 69. The Cogenhoe reply got off to a terrible start with Dave Patrick going to the second ball of the innings. A further 3 wickets fell as Cogenhoe tried to get maximum batting points by getting the required runs in under 15 overs. Whilst Ryan did manage one six the picture below captures his demise perfectly with some excellent camera work by John White.

Ryan Out

Fortunately Matt Morrissey with 36 not out combined power with good shoot selection to ease the Cooks to a third consecutive win and top position in division 12.
