Under 9`s give a glimpse of the future.

For the first time in our clubs 131 year history, we entered an under 9`s side in a tournament at St Crispins Ryelands on Sunday. Since last season the club has been expanding its under 9 junior section and we have some very talented and promising youngsters who are equally as enthusiastic about the game. Led by Matt Morrissey who has been superbly supported by Mukesh Dave and Ashley Davis the youngsters have been coached in the basics of the game and this year Matt felt confident enough to enter the boys in a tournament and it shows just how far they have come over that year as many of these youngsters had not even played the game before last season.Below is Matts` report of the tournament.

The first ‘competitive’ tournament for a Cogenhoe U9 team took place on Sunday 2nd June at St Crispins Ryelands CC against the hosts, East Haddon and Brixworth. The lads got points on the board early as Brixworth unfortunately didn’t turn up and so we claimed the win!

They followed this up with two hard fought games against East Haddon and St Crispins, that the lads battled hard in, but unfortunately came up short by 30 and 20 runs respectively.  It was great to see them all enjoying the games, putting their fundamentals into practice and shaking hands with their opponents at the end of each game.

Lots of things to work on, especially reducing the number of wides, but a fantastic start by the whole team Sam Glover, George Thompson, Charlie Tipler, Alex Price, Hrishi Dave, Aidan Garrett and Jake & Liam Morrissey that made their coach very proud!

Our congratulations to the boys many of whom were far younger than most of the other boys taking part and of course our thanks to Matt, Mukesh and Ash for their work so far with these youngsters and I know how impressed they are with the progress being made. Those of you who know your Cogenhoe CC history will note the name of George Thompson in the under 9`s line up. George Thompson married a Cogenhoe girl and lived in the village and played for Northants and England in the early part of the 1900`s ! so no pressure on the 2013 George!
